Survey: States Sticking With Common Core Standards
Associated Press (07/24/13) Hollingsworth, HeatherAccording to a recent survey from the Center on Education Policy at George Washington University, 37 of the 40 states responding to the survey said it was unlikely they would reverse, limit, or change their decision to adopt the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for reading, writing, and math. The only states that have not adopted CCSS are Alaska, Nebraska, Texas, and Virginia, while Minnesota adopted the reading standards, but not the standards for math. Efforts to hamper adoption of CCSS have cropped up in Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Indiana, Alabama, South Carolina, and Utah, but only two of the states surveyed said they faced challenges from colleges and universities regarding the standards and only five states felt that overcoming resistance to the standards was a major problem. Of those states surveyed, 30 said they would like federal help -- financial and an update of the federal education law -- in implementing the standards, particularly with the tests and teacher and principle training.
