Superintendent Juneau Makes Strong Pitch for Public Education

Helena Independent Record (MT) (02/04/13) Dennison, Mike When addressing a joint session of the Montana House and Senate, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau urged lawmakers to invest in the state's public schools, which she described as incubators for innovative, adaptive programs. She outlined several proposals for increased funding, saying, "There is no better economic development tool than making sure our young people receive a quality education so they can secure a good job and are better able to support a family. To be pro-business, you have to be pro-education." Among Juneau's proposed policies was a $1 million proposal to expand career and technical student organizations; a bill that would provide state funding for schools to use to help students up to age 19; and a proposal to increase Montana's compulsory school attendance age from 16 to 18.
