News Brief
Students' Turn to Grade Teachers
Maui News (HI) (09/26/13)K-12 students in Hawaii will take the Tripod Student Perceptions Survey through Oct. 18 to help improve teaching and learning by providing feedback to educators. The survey measures effective student-teacher relationships and elements of teaching quality and is part of the state's new Educator Effectiveness System (EES). Students can assess their engagement with teachers and provide information about their experience of teaching practices and classroom learning conditions, with a five-point scale used for students in grades 3-12 and a three-point scale for students in kindergarten through second grade. The survey will be administered twice each school year, and students' names will be kept confidential. According to State Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi, "Students interact with their teachers every school day. Their insights and reflections on classroom experiences will provide valuable information for educators and schools. The data we receive will allow us to focus on building on the strengths and working on the challenges in our classrooms. This is aligned to the goals set in our Strategic Plan to transform public education." Click here for more information on the survey and here for more information on the EES.
