States Move Ahead to Implement Common Core

Education Week (02/04/13) Gewertz, Catherine

A new report from Education First and the EPE Research Center, "Moving Forward: A National Perspective on States' Progress in Common Core State Standards Implementation Planning," looks at the progress being made by states in implementing the standards, with a focus on professional development, curriculum materials, and teacher evaluations. The report indicates that the number of states not having a completed plan in any of the three areas dropped to three as of the summer of 2012 from 18 in 2011, the number of states with completed plans in at least one area jumped from 28 to 44, and the number of states with completed plans in all three areas rose from seven to 21. Thirty-seven of the 46 states working on professional development have completed plans, up from 20 in 2011; and of the 42 states working on curriculum materials and teacher evaluation systems, 30 have completed plans. "The results of the survey indicate that, over the past year, most states have moved forward to fully develop plans in key areas widely considered to be necessary for successful implementation of the new standards," according to the report, which can be accessed here.
