State's Education Chief Shares His Vision
Corvallis Gazette-Times (OR) (11/01/12) Woodward, RajuIn a recent speech to educators, Oregon Chief Education Officer Rudy Crew stressed that confidence in the classroom and building relationships with students are keys to success. "I want the model in Oregon classrooms to focus on confidence. Confidence plus effort," he said. "When they say they can't do algebra or that they don't like math, you tell them you believe they can." Crew said the Oregon Education Investment Board overseeing Gov. John Kitzhaber's education initiatives recommends five steps for boosting student achievement: redesigning early childhood education to better prepare children for kindergarten; increasing the focus on reading, particularly among non-English-speaking students; improving parent and community engagement to increase demand for learning; developing and supporting teachers; and creating programs and partnerships to prepare students for careers. Additionally, Crew is pushing for stabilized education funding as part of the creation of a framework to improve education, calling it a "multi-year investment."This news brief was summarized for Chiefline, CCSSO's weekly newsletter.
