Education Week (08/07/13) Ujifusa, AndrewThe Center on Education Policy (CEP) has released a new report detailing how far along state education officials think they are in adopting the new Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and math. Officials in 30 states told CEP that at least some of their schools and districts already are putting the Common Cure curricula into practice, while those in 36 of the 39 states surveyed either agreed or strongly agreed with the idea that the new math standards require "substantially revised" curricula. When asked about major shifts in approaches to instruction triggered by the new standards, officials in all but three states agreed or strongly agreed that the math standards will require "fundamental changes" in instruction, and respondents from all but three states said big changes also are on the way for English/language arts instructors. Respondents in 18 states said they have revised their tests to better reflect the standards, and 15 said changes are in the works for the 2013-14 school year. The five remaining respondents said changing assessment tests is "not a focus" of their state education authority.
