State Test Scores Indicate Improvement in Math

Minnesota Commissioner of Education Brenda Cassellius said that the state plans to keep its tests and academic standards steady for the next decade or longer. On the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment scores, a series of tests taken by students in grades 3-8 and in high school, students scored better than last year in math, but not quite as well in science. Cassellius said the 2013 reading test is more difficult than the previous one, and the state was not surprised at this year's turnout. "We don't want to continue to change the targets. Let's let our teachers get used to the standards we have. They are excellent," Cassellius said. If the state continues to use the same assessments over a long period of time, trends are likely to emerge, and schools should be better able to assess students' needs, she said.
