State Superintendent Touts Common Core Standards at EHS
Easton Star Democrat (MD) (09/11/13) Allard, JenniferMaryland Superintendent of Schools Lillian Lowery said during a Sept. 10 public forum that the introduction of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) to schools' curriculum will change the way educators, students, parents, and the community as a whole see, understand, and use education. One of the most critical changes will focus on the integration of ideas and skills for students to ready themselves for a successful future outside the classroom, the education official said. While CCSS "do not dictate curriculum, [they do] provide benchmarks for success at each grade level in English language arts and mathematics to ensure that our students are college and career ready and prepared to succeed in their futures," Lowery said. "These standards will help set them on that path. Teachers and schools will continue to create lesson plans and individualize their instruction for the needs of their students using these benchmarks." She said one of the most noticeable changes parents can expect to see in the standards will come in the way in which English language arts and mathematics are presented to students.
