State Superintendent Seeks to Amend Education Legislation
Savannah Now (GA) (09/14/13) Peters, JessicahSouth Carolina Superintendent of Education Mick Zais and state lawmakers are working on amendments to the Education Accountability Act to help failing schools improve. Proposals would create a Transformation School District, which Zais says could be similar to a charter school education system with more freedom for an extended calendar or learning day. Under the proposals, the principal in the transformation district would have the freedom to hire staff and establish governance, and a separate superintendent for the transformation district, instead of the local county school district. Zais says, "Our traditional system expects children to learn the same way and at the same pace. It's an assembly line, based on standardization instead of personalization. It's a system that is teacher-focused on how it's taught and for how long instead of what the students are capable of and what they're learning. It's a system that produces frustration and failure." Moreover, he explains, "All children can reach their potential. Poor kids can learn so that's not an excuse. We will never fix poverty until we fix education." He also notes that a student-centered education system needs to be developed.
