State Superintendent Calls for Big Pay Boost for Teachers
Detroit Free Press (01/28/13) Higgins, LoriMichigan Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan says to attract more mathematicians and scientists into the teaching profession, teacher salaries should be increased to $100,000 or more. "When you ratchet up teacher salaries to $100,000-plus, market forces will direct more mid-career changers and you'll attract more math and science college students into our educator prep programs," he says. "[All the work being done to increase academic standards] won't do much good if we don't have enough math and science teachers in our schools." Flanagan says all teachers should be moved to that salary level, not just science and math teachers -- a move that is supported by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
