State Seeks More Pre-K Programs for Pilot

Shreveport Times (LA) (12/09/13) Hasten, Mike

Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White wants new pre-kindergarten programs to participate in a initiative to better prepare preschoolers. The pilot program is currently in 15 parishes and private schools. White says the intention is to have every child care center, Head Start program, and school board-sponsored preschool performing at the same level. So far, the program has made progress, he says. The offer for new programs ends on Jan. 2, and accepted programs can receive between $80,000 and $350,000 to implement the new guidelines. White says he hopes to add an additional 15 parishes in 2014. In 2015, Louisiana law will require all early childhood education programs to have the same curriculum.
