State Schools Chief Kicks Off California's Common Core Summer
KHTS AM-1220 (06/17/13) Mariuz, DavidCalifornia Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recently rolled out California's Common Core Summer, which will consist of two showcases to train teachers in the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). "[Teachers have] just finished their own school year, but they're already back in class -- because they see the opportunity Common Core presents to prepare students for a successful future," he said at the first showcase in Sacramento. The Math CCSS Showcase, held June 17, brought together 150 teachers from across the state to show them how to integrate CCSS math content standards and practices and improve student engagement, among other things. On June 24, the English-Language Arts CCSS Showcase will be held in Sacramento to show teachers how to interpret and teach complex reading materials and build knowledge through content-rich information, among other things. According to Torlakson, "We're remodeling our education system, but the standards are just the blueprints. The real work, the heavy lifting of this remodeling project, will be done by teachers. That's why we've brought some of California's best teachers here, to learn from each about about putting the Common Core to work in the classroom." School districts and county education offices statewide are holding similar training sessions, he added.
