State Pulling Out of Standardized Testing Through Consortium

Tulsa World (07/01/13) Eger, Andrea

Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi has announced that the state will withdraw from testing through the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), which is aligned with the Common Core standards. The state will, instead, turn to a testing company to develop its own assessments based on the standards for the 2014-15 academic year. "We came to this decision after many months of deliberation, listening to classroom teachers, curriculum directors, superintendents, and visiting with legislative leadership and the governor's office," she said. Along with parent concerns about the additional hours of test-taking the PARCC assessments would require, Barresi said concerns about the technology readiness of the state's public schools and higher-than-anticipated costs also factored into the decision. Gov. Mary Fallin and Barresi will consult on whether the state should remain part of the consortium to continue accessing information and expertise or withdraw from it completely.
