State, Local Schools See Increase in State Writing Scores

Lexington Clipper-Herald (05/26/13) Holsinger, Roger

Data released by the Nebraska Department of Education show that writing test scores for the state's eighth- and 11th-graders improved this year. The department publicly released the writing test scores as part of the Nebraska State Accountability Writing Assessment (NeSA). Writing test results showed that 66 percent of eighth-graders met or exceeded state standards, a 2 percent increase over last year, while 68 percent of 11th graders met or exceeded standards, representing a 6 percent increase. Nebraska Education Commissioner Roger Breed is pleased the findings showed more students meeting or exceeding the writing standards. "Strong writing skills are essential for success in the workplace and at college," Breed says. "Our high-school graduates entering the business world must have strong writing skills. Young people attending college will find themselves writing in every class."
