State Granted No Child Left Behind Waiver
Athens News-Courier (AL) (06/22/13) West, KimAlabama Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice says the state has been awarded a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) that will enable it to use its Plan 2020 to measure public school achievement. Bice says, "Plan 2020 is a rigorous and comprehensive Alabama-developed plan designed to improve educational outcomes for all students, close achievement gaps, increase equity, and improve the quality of instruction. The waiver from NCLB is just one part of the overall Plan 2020 approach. Ultimately, what will result is a system that uses the college and career-readiness of its graduates as its capstone measure of success." The 2020 plan has set a 72 percent baseline graduation rate for 2012 and incrementally increases that baseline every year until 2016, when the goal is to graduate 90 percent or more of students.
