State Education Officials Want to Untie Tests From Evaluations
WYPR (MD) (09/25/2013) Glenn, GwendolynMaryland Superintendent Lillian Lowery agrees with educators who insist it is unfair to use standardized test scores in teacher evaluations when the Maryland School Assessment exams do not measure what is being taught under the Common Core State Standards. She plans to seek a federal waiver to delay the use of test scores in the evaluations while the standards are being implemented. "The fact that our teachers and leaders at the school level know that they're not going to be held to any kind of punitive measures this year as we're going through this transition really has been of great benefit," she says. The waiver will provide enough time to develop a sound evaluation process under the Common Core, Lowery adds, with standardized tests incorporating the new curriculum slated for implementation in 2014.
