State Board of Education Approves Math Plan
Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) (10/26/12) Reid, ZacharyThe Virginia Board of Education unanimously approved a new annual measurable objectives for math proposed by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia I. Wright. The new standards, part of the state's waiver application from the federal No Child Left Behind regulations, aim to close achievement gaps in math scores between white students and black and Hispanic students, as well as those with learning disabilities. Wright says, "These (objectives) are not goals, they are not expectations. These simply are progress metrics." Over the next six years, all school divisions must show pass rates of at least 73 percent. Currently, Asian students and white students are within 5 percent of that goal, but students with disabilities are 40 percent behind; black students and Hispanic students are 45 percent and 52 percent behind, respectively.
