State Approves 'Safety Net' for School Grades

The Florida State Board of Education decided on July 16 that school grades will not fall by more than one letter, regardless of their score, when rankings are released soon. State Education Commissioner Tony Bennett recommended that the letter grade "safety net" be brought back to ensure stability as the Common Core State Standards are implemented. Bennett -- who wants the school grades to be released by the end of July -- is pushing for transparency in the state's accountability system. "Frankly, we will have to make sure that everyone understands true school performance. Data will speak to itself, and how that gets reported out and presented is important," he says.
