Some States on Pace to Hit 90 Percent High School Grad. Rate by 2020

Education Week (02/25/13) Adams, Caralee

The Grad Nation campaign set a goal in 2010 that by 2020, the high school graduation rate would be 90 percent. The coalition's latest report shows that with a four-year graduation rate of 78.2 percent in 2010, the pace of improvement is picking up, and some states could meet that goal sooner if the progress continues. The fourth annual Grad Nation report, "2013 Building a Grad Nation: Progress and Challenge in Ending the High School Dropout Epidemic," attributes much of the growth to higher graduation rates among Latino and African-American students. Nevertheless, significant disparities remain between the performance of white and minority students. The report says the nation's ability to close these gaps will determine whether it meets and maintains a 90 percent graduation rate by 2020.
