School Testing Goes Online in South Dakota for 2014
Sioux Falls Argus Leader (SD) (07/14/13) Verges, JoshBeginning in 2014, South Dakota public school students will take new Smarter Balance assessments to assess their abilities in math and English, replacing the STEP assessments. The new tests are in line with the Common Core State Standards and were written by the Smarter Balanced consortium. Next spring's tests will be a trial run, meaning school-by-school results will not be published and schools will not be penalized for low scores. South Dakota Education Secretary Melody Schopp said that by this coming school year, South Dakota schools and teachers should have fully switched to the Common Core, so it makes sense to move on from Dakota STEP. "We know that as we're implementing Common Core, we are teaching to one set of standards but testing on another set of standards," she said.
