SIG Funds Designated for Buffalo Schools

Buffalo Business First (03/26/13) Miner, Dan

The New York State Education Department will provide $22.5 million in School Improvement Grants (SIGs) to the Buffalo City School District. About $4.5 million each was awarded to Buffalo schools 31, 89, 91, and 198 for implementing the transformation model that replaces the principal and implementing the Annual Professional Performance Review plans. Another $4.5 million was awarded to Buffalo school 80 for implementing a restart model in which the school was either converted to a charter school, replaced with a charter school, or an education partner was selected to govern and manage the school and implement the SIG plan. State Education Commissioner John King, Jr., says, "Many English language learners, students with disabilities, and low-income students are in schools that need to change. SIG grants can help give those students the chance to attend schools that are changing what's happening in the classroom. We're trying to make sure that all students have the opportunity to graduate with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and careers." The other school districts receiving SIG funds included Poughkeepsie ($4.5 million), Syracuse ($31.5 million), Troy ($4.3 million), and Yonkers ($13.5 million).
