Ritz Touts Early Childhood Programs at Fair
Shelbyville News (Ind.) (04/06/13) Gable, PaulIndiana Superintendent of Public Education Glenda Ritz said recently that she supports early childhood education, even though the state is only one of 11 without dedicated funding for preschool. About 50 percent of Indiana's students start kindergarten without any early childhood education. Meanwhile, she touted a new summer reading initiative. "Reading is fundamental to everything. The program will be called, 'Hoosier Family of Readers,' and the family can be anyone. It can be a coach, teacher, parent, mentor, anyone who will read. Studies have shown that children need to be read to 20 minutes a day in addition to what they do during the school day. We have to make sure we have a concerted effort," she explained.
