Ringstaff: Common Core Has 'Awesome' Prospects

Officials in Tennessee have formed a 22-member State Leadership Council to help the state transition to the Common Core Standards, which are meant to ensure that high school students in participating states -- so far, 45 states and the District of Columbia are on board -- are learning the same information and are equally prepared for graduation. Cleveland City Schools Director and member of the council Martin Ringstaff said that Common Core is an "awesome" thing for Tennessee. "It is not a mandatory, nationally driven, 'you have to do it or else' kind of situation," Ringstaff said. He said the focus will be on college preparation and readying students for careers. The new standards also do away with multiple-choice questions. "Not only do you have to get the right answer, but you have to show you got that right answer," Ringstaff said. "Everything is word problems now." The tests will emphasize speaking, listening, and conversational skills.
