Q&A: NY Education Commissioner on New Curriculum Standards

New York Education Commissioner John King, Jr., stands behind the state's adoption of the Common Core State Standards as a means of improving academic standards and raising graduation requirements. While King says student scores could be lower this year, neither students nor teachers will be adversely affected as everyone will be judged by the same standards. In an interview with the Albany Business Review, King said, "The Common Core is an important effort to ensure that our students who graduate from high school are prepared for college and career success. ... The state Education Department is working to support good professional development and provide the materials to help teachers, principals, and other professionals make that shift toward the Common Core." He continues to urge business leaders to spread the word in their communities about the education standards and how they can prepare students for workforce needs.
