Pre-K Overhaul Pilots to Expand

Baton Rouge Advocate (LA) (09/13/13) Sentell, Will

Louisiana Education Superintendent John White says that the state will expand, and possibly double, the number of pilot projects testing Louisiana's overhaul of how 4-year-olds are educated in the spring. Thirteen groups in 15 parishes are currently testing the changes, which include how to improve teaching and learning, how child sites are rated, and how they are funded. White says, "Pilot, listen, and then we launch," noting that the programs will help the state identify best practices for replication across the state. The reforms are expected to offer funding based on performance, make it easier for families to find pre-K classes, how kids from ages birth to age 5 should be graded, and ensure professional development for teachers. Report cards that rate child care providers will be issued on a trial basis for the 2015-16 school year.
