PA Awarded $6.5 Million Grant to Help Students With Disabilities Learn

Pennsylvania educators who provide special education services to students with disabilities will receive professional development through a $6.5 million, five-year federal grant awarded to the State Department of Education. The intensive and ongoing professional development will, among other things, enable educators to effectively teach the Pennsylvania Common Core academic standards; lead to the implementation of policies, practices, and procedures that support learning for all students; boost student achievement in English, language arts, and math; provide communication supports and technology to help these students participate and engage in learning; ensure higher education institutions provide the necessary training to future educators and school leaders; and increase expectations for student achievement among parents. "Ensuring that educators who work with children with disabilities have the resources and training necessary to focus on the needs of their students is of the utmost importance," says Pennsylvania Education Secretary Ron Tomalis. "The Department of Education is committed to all students, including those with disabilities, learning the Pennsylvania Common Core academic standards."
