Our View: Way to Boost College Graduation Rates

The recent Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation study on the effectiveness of dual enrollment curriculum or competitive-enrollment, early-college programs reveals that students engaged in high school and college-level courses have higher and firmer college graduation rates. Delaware Education Secretary Mark Murphy says, "[This is] good information about what happens to our children when they go to college." As a result, the state is working on partnership efforts, including one that provides real-time information to institutions of higher learning about the effectiveness and scheduling of remedial programs for struggling new students. Another program stemming from a partnership between Colonial School District and Wilmington University allows William Penn High students to earn college credits if they complete classes taught by university professors, and if students earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, they can receive 100 percent tuition for the fall semester. Through an outreach program, the State Department of Education targets students and parents who are not confident they are academically or financially suited for a college career. "We are almost meeting with them monthly. We ask them what can we do to help these kids be successful," Murphy says.
