Officials Urge Districts to Raise the Dropout Age

In Kentucky, a new state law effective June 25 phases in an increase in the compulsory school attendance age from 16 to 18. State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday is encouraging the state's 174 school districts to increase the dropout age, with the Kentucky Department of Education to give $10,000 planning grants to the first 94 school districts to do so. Those voluntarily adopting the measure will implement it in the 2015-16 school year, but once 55 percent of districts approve the change, the remaining districts will be required to implement the policy within four years. According to Holliday, "Our goal is to graduate every student in Kentucky ready for college and career. We can't do that if they're not in school."
