Next Generation Science Standards Open for Public Review, Comment

Wichita Eagle (KS) (01/24/13) Tobias, Suzanne Perez

The public review and comment period for the second draft of the Next Generation Science Standards, developed with the help of 26 states, ended on Jan. 29. Kansas Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker says, "We're pleased to have another opportunity for a broader audience to view the work being done [on the standards.] The public review periods ensure all voices are heard with regard to the standards development." The globally benchmarked standards define what students must learn from grades K-12, with the final standards expected in March. Kathy Toelkes, spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Education, notes that while this is the final public draft of the standards, state review panels will examine at least one more draft before the standards are finalized. She says the Kansas State Board of Education is under no obligation to adopt the final version, even though the state has agreed to give serious consideration to their adoption.
