New York to Evaluate Teachers With New System

The New York Times (06/02/13) P. A20 Joseph, Channing

New York State Education Commissioner John King, Jr., has imposed a new teacher evaluation system on New York City schools to bring the district into compliance with state law. Under the system, state-approved measures of student growth will account for 20 percent to 25 percent of a teacher's rating, measures established by schools will account for 15 percent to 20 percent, and in-class or video observations will account for 55 percent to 60 percent. The district is the only one in the state in which individual schools are tasked with a substantial part of the implementation for the evaluations, and teachers could have a say in how they are rated. "[The new plan will] help improve teaching and learning and give New York City students a much better opportunity to graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and their careers," says King. "There is the opportunity for differentiation on the school level."
