New Teachers Should 'B' Ready for Tougher Standards

New Jersey Education Commissioner Chris Cerf has proposed regulations to require would-be teachers to have a college grade point average of 3.0, or the equivalent of a B average. Currently, the minimum is 2.75, though about 50 percent of the state's teacher education programs already require a 3.0 for enrollment and graduation. Also included in the proposed regulatory changes for teacher preparation were a new basic skills exam for entering teacher programs, a new performance test that would be required to achieve certification, and a new evaluation system for current teachers. If the requirements are approved, they would be phased in over two years, according to the education department.
