New State Board of Education Meets for 1st Time

NBC Rhode Island (03/12/13) Tremmel, JulieRhode Island's Board of Governors for Higher Education and the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education officially merged on March 11 to become The Rhode Island Board of Education. "It's an exciting day. This is a big change for Rhode Island," said State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist. The group held its first meeting and official vote on March 11, and some education experts said the merged boards will provide students with new opportunities. Additionally, some indicate that the new board means changes are on the way, including redefining "what it means for our students to leave our schools ready for college, ready for higher education," Gist said. She added that the new system will let teachers and guidance counselors build a more customized learning framework for each student.
