New Standards Lead to Success

Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which were adopted in 2010 as the Kentucky Core Academic Standards, have offered a number of positives for students. He says the CCSS are aligned with college- and career-readiness expectations and are more rigorous than prior standards, as they require students to think critically and develop job skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. The Kentucky standards, he says, enable local control over curriculum and teaching methods, allowing districts to establish their own curriculum. Holliday adds that even though student test scores have dropped under the new standards, they "will rise as students and teachers become more familiar with the new standards."
