New Rules Set Testing Standard for Iowa Teachers

Cedar Rapids Gazette (Iowa) (11/07/12) Wiser, MikeThe Iowa State Board of Education has approved new rules that will require prospective teachers -- beginning with those graduating in spring 2013 -- to score in the 25th percentile on two national tests in order to obtain their teaching certificates. Only elementary school teachers are presently required to take two exams, but the new rules expand the requirement to all teachers. Rules are in the works for out-of-state teachers with teaching certificates in their home states who wish to be certified in Iowa. Meanwhile, State Education Director Jason Glass says a performance-based assessment for teachers should be finalized by fall 2013.
