New Pre-K Plan to Get Run Through
The Advocate (11/28/12) Sentell, WillLouisiana Superintendent John White says the state's prekindergarten overhaul will be tested for at least one year before decisions are made on how schools and centers are graded. "Until we see how those assessments work we will not develop an accountability measure," he says. State officials will create early learning performance guidelines for those up to age three and academic standards for those between ages three and four. The new rules include grades, funding based on performance, and new steps to make locating pre-K classes and professional development for teachers easier. White has said that grades will be based on classroom instruction and progress children make toward kindergarten. Currently, 54 percent of children enter kindergarten ready to learn, but the state has a goal of 70 percent. A statewide trial run of the new system is set for the 2014-15 school year, but all changes will take effect in the 2015-16 school year.
