New Mexico Implementing New System to Identify Students at Risk of Dropping Out of School

Associated Press (04/18/13)

The New Mexico Public Education Department will implement an early warning system to help schools identify students at risk of dropping out. The legislature has approved $500,000 to fund the initiative. Data already collected by the department -- including third grade reading proficiency, middle school truancy rates, and freshman grades -- will be used to compile reports for school counselors that gauge whether students are having problems that might prompt them to drop out. The information will be available to schools in the 2013-14 school year. State Education Secretary Hanna Skandera says, "We know factors such as reading proficiency, truancy, and failure in core courses are all warning signs a student may drop out. It's time we use this information to get more of our students to graduate."
