New Kentucky Academic Standards for Science Advance Despite Critics
Louisville Courier-Journal (KY) (06/06/13) Wynn, MikeThe Kentucky Board of Education has approved new academic science standards for public education, including updates on evolution and climate change. The new standards will ask middle and high school students to consider human impacts on weather. Education officials from more than 25 states have worked for two years on the standards, which included input from teachers, college faculty, scientists, and engineers. Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says the new standards reflect the latest research but offer few changes to how evolution and climate change are taught in the classroom. "We are not asking people to change their beliefs. We are just asking people to understand the science so they can be successful in entry-level college science courses," he explains. The new standards cover science education from kindergarten through high school and will be subject to the state's regulatory process of public hearings and reviews by the House and Senate Education Committees.
