Nearly $500 Million From Race to Top to Fund Early Learning, District Ideas

The U.S. Department of Education will dole out another $490 million in Race to the Top grants in fiscal 2013. Around $120 million will be awarded as part of the second round of the Race to the Top district competition, and $370 million will be awarded to early-learning initiatives, with California, Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wisconsin receiving the second half of their awards for early-learning initiatives. It remains uncertain how much of the funds will be given to new states for early-learning initiatives and whether the district awards will be given to those who came close but did not win in 2012 or whether an entirely new district competition will be held.
