Nearly 20 Pecent of High Schoolers in Concurrent Enrollment

Fort Morgan Times (Colo.) (02/23/13)

A report by the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Department of Higher Education reveals that 19 percent of the state's high school students took part in dual enrollment programs -- in which they are enrolled in at least one post-secondary level course at the same time as they attend high school -- during the 2011-12 school year. Participation in dual enrollment programs climbed 15.5 percent over the past year, and the number of higher education institutions and high schools taking part rose to 18 and 304, respectively. According to State Education Commissioner Robert Hammond, "Dual Enrollment programs allow students to cross the finish line of high school graduation while still having all the support of a high school environment. Through this program, students can see unique relevance of their high school work through a new lens of how it connects to their future. Looking at our success rates over the last couple of years, Colorado should be proud that we have about 500 students who have graduated high school who already have post-secondary credentials.
