Nation's Graduation Rate Nears a Milestone
Education Week (06/06/13) Swanson, Christopher B.; Lloyd, Sterling C.According to a new analysis from the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, the graduation rate for America's public schools in 2010 was close to 75 percent, rising nearly two full percentage points from the previous year and eight points in the last decade. At the current rate of improvement, the graduation rate could reach 77.1 percent in the next few years. Many of the graduation rate gains have been driven by historically underserved groups, rising 16 percentage points to 68 percent among Latino students and 13 points to 62 percent among black students in the last 10 years. Graduation rates among Native American students edged up three percentage points since 2000, while rates jumped six points and five points among whites and Asian-Americans, respectively. Graduation rates also climbed in most states in the last decade, with 46 states posting gains ranging from a fraction of a point to nearly 32 points.
