National Science Standards Could Be in Store for Alabama Schools

With the adoption of the Common Core State Standards, states are now turning to the new Next Generation Science Standards. Alabama Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice says, "Are we going to look at those standards? Absolutely, we are." The state's standards have not been updated since 2006, but education officials plan to review every state's standards and all other available information first. The new science standards establish a common minimum each student should master by grade level, but how students meet those goals is left up to the teachers. Additionally, the standards aim to ensure high school graduates receive an internationally benchmarked education while allowing states to add as much of their own state-specific content as they want, provided the national standards remain intact.
