N.Y. Gets Waiver to Limit Middle-School Math Exams

New York Education Commissioner John King, Jr., says the state received a federal waiver to end the double testing of students who take a Regents exam in math in seventh or eighth grade as well as the state math assessment under the Common Core. Beginning this spring, only the Regents exam will be given. King says, "USDE's approval of New York's waiver request means the end of double-testing for nearly 60,000 New York students. The Regents, the Chancellor, and I are committed to reducing the amount of time students spend on tests and eliminating any tests that don't inform instruction or improve student learning." The state also seeks flexibility on Native Language Tests for Spanish-speaking students and students with disabilities.
