NYS Education Commissioner Discusses Common Core in Troy

As part of his state of education address at the Fourth Annual Esteves School Education Speaker Series at the Sage College, New York State Commissioner of Education Dr. John King, Jr., answered questions about the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. He said, "We've committed as a state to the Common Core, we have work to do improve implementation, and we look forward to doing that work along with the governor, the legislature, and our school districts." He also expressed concern over any delay in the implementation of the standards and noted that his department has "put forward a $1.3 billion proposal for the increase in education spending" to allow the implementation of the Common Core. King said that although he believes this amount will be enough to support the state's schools, "Obviously the budget process will play out over the next few weeks and we'll see where the governor and the legislature end up. At the same time, school districts need to think carefully about how resources are allocated, and we see boards and superintendents grappling with these tough decisions."
