Montana Schools Awarded 35 Grants (MT) (03/12/14)

The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation awarded 35 grants totaling $203,000 to Montana Schools and United Ways under the Graduation Matters program, which State Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau says has helped push down the statewide dropout rate to 3.6 percent in 2013 from 5 percent in 2009. The funds can be used for tutoring, credit recovery, and workshops for students applying to college. Juneau says, "We know that in a few years there's going to be a high majority of jobs ... available [that] are going to need post-secondary education, whether that is a certificate or a four year degree. It's going to need some sort post-secondary training so that first step is getting that high school diploma. Without that, students' lives, the life chances are so minimized."
