Minnesota Adopts New Social Studies Standards

Hutchinson Leader (04/16/13)

Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius and Gov. Mark Dayton have approved the new social studies standards developed and unanimously approved by a committee of 46 K-12 and post-secondary educators, business and government representatives, and parents. The State Department of Education can move forward to complete the remaining steps in the formal rule-making process before implementing the standards. The revised standards now include college and career readiness; financial literacy (personal finance); geographic information systems skills; grade-specific benchmarks for grades K-8; and technology and information literacy. Districts will have increased flexibility in choosing and developing curriculum as the new standards place the focus on developing the critical skills and comprehension that students need to master, so they are prepared for post-secondary education and advanced work.
