Massachusetts Schools to Try the National PARCC Assessment Test This Year

MassLive.com (07/29/13) DeForge, Jeanette

Massachusetts will test the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test, which will eventually replace the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Systems, in 2014. PARCC, which has 14 coalition members and the District of Columbia, offers more open-ended questions than multiple-choice options on traditional standardized tests and will evaluate whether students can analyze information, solve mathematical word problems, and write well. State Education Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester says, "Fifteen states have made the commitment to participate in the field test." The field test of PARCC will be given to 10 percent of students in grades 3-11, though the tests will not be scored. The test will evaluate how students react to and answer questions, and questions will be modified or eliminated based on the results. The first scored test is expected to be released in the spring of 2015.
