Luna Talks About Core Standards and Its Future

KMVT Southern Idaho (05/27/13) Martin, Joey

Idaho Superintendent of Schools Tom Luna says, "Our goal is that by 2016 we want 60 percent of our adult population in Idaho to have some form of post high school degree of certification. Today that number is 34 percent." The state has adopted the new Common Core State Standards, which Luna says "are going to help us better prepare our students so when they do graduate from high school they'll be ready for the jobs that are out there ... they'll be ready for college." Education leaders are aware of the opposition to the standards but remain hopeful that the public will give the standards a chance to improve education. Luna says, "The federal government has not enticed us or offered us any money or does not give us money to work together as states to adopt common standards. It's going to take great schools to prepare our children for the world that awaits them." To read the full article, click here
