Louisiana Education Head: Teachers Will Get More Autonomy
Town Talk News (04/18/13) McElfresh, AmandaDuring the recent Teacher Leaders Kickoff Event, Louisiana Department of Education Superintendent John White said the state will provide teachers with more resources and greater flexibility to make individual changes to meet student needs. The state plans to move away from the standardized teaching model. He said, "We need to put power in the hands of our educators. You have to make decisions that are best for your students. This will not work if we sit on our hands and wait for bureaucrats like me to come up with a magic solution." Although the state has made significant academic progress, with improvements in student test scores, White said the more rigorous curriculum and assessments call for teachers to take the lead and have the ability to adjust lesson plans and instructional means based on student needs. "Those closest to the students need to make decisions on behalf of the students. We're shifting our approach a little bit. It's a simple shift, but it is a shift," he said.
