01/05/13Kansas Governor Sets Sights on Boosting Reading
Kansas City Star (01/05/13) Milburn, JohnKansas Gov. Sam Brownback acknowledges that more must be done to boost the reading levels of younger students, and State Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker said research has shown that school readiness can improve by having higher amounts of words spoken at home, especially through reading to children. She says the Opportunity Project in Wichita, which provides education to low-income children, is one example of efforts to address the early learning problem. Studies conducted by The Opportunity Project found that students in its centers scored an average of 10 points higher on state reading assessments than students who did not attend but are demographically similar.
