Innovative Approach to Teaching and Learning Transforms Small Town School
SurfKY.com (07/20/13) Nelson, Amanda; Wells, JennyWhen the College of Education at the University of Kentucky created a program to build capacity in leaders to design new systems for learning, Eminence's superintendent Buddy Berry and instructional supervisor Thom Coffee were among the first participants. The Next Generation Leadership Academy aims to create a new form of education reform that eliminates what does not work in the education system and replace it with ways of learning that will prepare all students for college and careers. Next Generation Learning, for instance, aims to build bridges between school districts and higher education through the Kentucky P20 Innovation Lab, and school leaders are selected to participate in a year-long leadership academy in which they have a set of goals and ideas on how to make changes to the education system. The prototypes created are then implemented within their schools in Learning Innovation Zones (iZones) where college faculty and school personnel work together to redesign and rethink current policies, practices, and programs to support 21st century learners. When an idea shows promise among students, networks are established across the state and in several others states with the help of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). These state-based networks then create proof points of scalable initiatives and system redesigns that deliver desired educational outcomes that can serve as models for education redesign.
